Industrial resins and bioresins

Resin is an organic product. It can be solid or semi-solid, of natural or synthetic origin. It has no specific melting point and, generally, a high molecular weight.

Many resins are polymers. The key distinction you need to keep in mind is that between thermoplastic and thermosetting resins.

  • Thermoplastic resins: linear or branched polymers that can be melted thanks to a correct quantity of heat. It is important to know that they don’t undergo any chemical changes during the plasticizing stage.
  • Thermosetting resins: these are rather rigid materials that are composed of cross-linked polymers, where the motion of polymer chains is severely limited due to the high number of existing cross-links. They undergo an irreversible chemical modification during the transformation stage.
